I just thought I'd share some mid level money habits i picked up while trying so desperately to save for my Mount.
At level 33 I realized that I wanted to get my mount at level 40. Of course, I hadn't seen more than 10 gold yet since I am an avid auction house junky. So after a little experimentation I came up with this little routine that seemed to work well while I was out solo.
1. I began fishing from the Harbor in the Wetlands. About once every minute you can catch either Oily Blackmouth or Firefin Snapper. These always sell on auction for 5s - 10s a piece. Plus you invest zero resources and zero equipment repair doing it. Also, there is no auction deposit, so if they all don't sell no loss to you. I spent 20 minutes a day doing this.
2. In the Wetlands, near the entrance from Dun Algaz is Theldon Rock (some name like that) where all the spiders are. I would farm these spiders on a routine basis. After about 1 hour you can get over 1g worth of spider parts, 2 green items, and spider's silk (which sells everytime on auction for 15s). The down side is that you get no xp since these spiders are low level (cake walk). I would try to spend 1 hour a day running these spiders.
3. Auction House rules: Try not to upgrade equipment every level. Look ahead and budget. When selling, I always try to use a buyout price which encourages quick sell of item. Try to auction all items green or better at least once (resell to vendor sucks). And those white items... a lot of those sell for more than pocket change on auction, so don't overlook those.
4. Upgrade your bags. This should be a priority upgrade. The more slots you have the more loot you can carry. And if you follow my guide in step 3 you will find your inventory fills fast between trips to the auction house.
I started at level 33 with 10g and by level 35 I had 50g. I did not stop adventuring, but just added these into my daily routine when playing solo. From 35 I figured I just needed to gain 10g per level advancement. This was real easy, since I had just enforced some good money making habits onto myself. Also from 35, I left the spiders alone, but still fish since I like doing it. I found that I had money to stay on track for the mount plus did not have to sacrifice new abilities or equipment upgrades.
Today I hit 40 with 135g in my pocket and a few items in inventory. Bought my mount and did a total armor upgrade (Hunter's get to wear mail at 40 ) I still have 29 gold left over and over 10 items up for auction.
Hopefully this helps you in their pursuit of money and may your adventure for your Mount be enjoyable, not stressfull.

I would also suggest using the user interface "Auctioneer" - i couldnt live without it.
Auctioneer:
This plugin provides you with in-game data on data that is collated by you at the auction house. You trigger the data gathering by either clicking the "Scan" button on the main page of the Auction House, or by typing "/auctioneer scan" manually.
It provides you with methods to identify the bargains at the auction house (the percentless and bidbroker commands) by identifying price trends and then finding items that will buyout or bidout for less than the trend data suggests should be it's correct price. By identifying these items, you can play the market. Buying low and then relisting at the market norm.
This plugin also provides you with a database of vendor buy and sell prices, what professions will use the item and stack sizes for a relativly large set (about 7000) of common in-game items. This data is presented when you mouse over an item, and the tooltip appears (Yes, even when looting)

It's been a bit of time since I posted this thread. I would like to take the time and update. The technique I used back then did work for me, but since, I have found a much easier way.
1) ASAP, get your connection to the Auction House.
2) All items green and blue should be auctioned if not used. Also most whites will sell also. The Auction House is where you will make your $$$.
3) Get more Bags! I cannot stress that the more slots you have to carry items the longer you will be able to build up loot. If money is an issue (which it is at first), buy a couple 8 or 10 slot bags and then upgrade to 14s when you can afford. Remember, if you spend the gold early you won't have to upgrade later. There is no level restriction on Bags.
4) I found that having 2 gathering abilities really helps with the money early on. I would recommend skinning to be one of them. If you are gonna kill it and loot it, you might as well skin it too.
5) Do not be and Auction House Junky. Try to restrain the equipment upgrades to every 3 levels. I know some people who upgrade every level. It seems to me that you can almost level daily in the low levels, always upgrading seems like a waste of your hard earned money.
Also, don't buy your equipment from vendors. You will always find something better and cheaper in the auction house.
I have used this technique (with my Horde toon, Sunnyjim) and it works pretty good. Also it reduces the stress of "how am I gonna make 90g in the next couple levels. Before I hit level 30 I had over 60g in my pocket. My gear is not gimped. And I did not grind or farm (I was leveling through quests). The key is to start early and your path will be paved with Gold!

Saving for your Epic Mount...
Well, I managed to pull together my $$$ in about 2 weeks time. I was level 60 and it was motivated by the latest patch which rewarded level 60s with money instead of wasted xp for quest rewards. I found myself going to all those places I had never really explored.. Silithus, Blasted Lands, Searing Gorge, and others. Through this money reward system I was able to acquire my gold.
OK, let's not forget that I still keep the habits I learned from above posts. I do auction almost everything. I am a skinner, so I also auction skins. I really have no need to upgrade my equipment, so I'm not wasting money in auction house for that stuff.
*I would recommend that when you hit 60, and you want to buy equipment, figure out what it is you want and do it only once.
If you still need money, find a spot to farm. I would recommend somewhere that is not level 60, money drops, and an item of some sorts drops. Pick a place with lots of mobs you can easily handle (time waiting for respawns and/or healing is lost time). If you want to know where I hang out just ask me, although I do not guarantee anything.
As far as priority goes.. Make sure you have your equipment plan squared away first. The Epic Mount is nice, but it doesn't fight for you, or make you better in groups.
With that said, I would like to say that I very much like the Epic Mount. It is worth the money. Not for the status of having, but the ease of travelling without getting stunned by those mobs you don't really want to fight.
Oh, one more thing. It was mentioned above by another, the add on Auctioneer. I use it. You should use it, too. It let's you know price info. It helps me decide what I will try to auction and what will go straight to vendor. And in a pinch (and the real reason I have it) when your bags are full and you have that item you think is worth something but no space, this add on will let you know the value so you can drop the most worthless item in your inventory. The object is to make money, isn't it?
