World of Warcraft Client Patch 1.8.3 (2005-11-0
New Blizzard Launcher
A new launch utility has been created to enhance your entry into World of Warcraft! The Blizzard Launcher will provide up-to-date news and important event- and support-related updates. In some regions, the Blizzard Launcher also scans for Trojan viruses and third-party cheat programs and notifies you if it has located any on your machine. In addition to providing you with the benefits of additional anti-virus protection, the scan that the launcher conducts represents another security measure to protect your World of Warcraft account information and gameplay experience. Blizzard Launcher - FAQ
Page 1. of 1
(solution id: 1907)
This document describes the functionality and purpose of the Blizzard Launcher™.
Q: What is the Blizzard Launcher?
The Blizzard Launcher is a start area for the game World of Warcraft.
Q: What is the purpose of the Blizzard Launcher?
A: The Blizzard Launcher serves many purposes. Some of which are:
* Distribute news to those who may not visit the World of Warcraft website regularly
* Keep the public up to date on issues that may affect their gameplay
* Protect the user from viruses and other malicious programs that may attempt to steal their account name and password
* Uphold the Terms of Use by warning players who have cheat programs installed on the computers on which they’re playing World of Warcraft that the cheat programs are there
Q: The Blizzard Launcher says that I have a virus, but I know that I don’t. What can I do?
A: If you have anti-virus software installed, it may not be completely up to date. Most virus scanners will connect to the Internet to download the latest virus definitions. It is highly recommended that you keep your anti-virus software up to date. It may also be advisable to get a second opinion, so to speak, by checking with another brand of detection software. You may want to check our Computer Security Page for more information.
Q: What if the Blizzard Launcher didn’t catch a virus that stole my password?
A: Unfortunately, virus creators are quite persistent and new viruses are released almost on a daily basis. It is advisable that you also employ the use of the specialized anti-virus scanner, as the Blizzard Launcher may not always catch every virus.
Q: Why does the Blizzard Launcher say I am using a 3rd party cheat program?
A: Blizzard Entertainment is attempting to keep the World of Warcraft game service fair and free from players who use “cheats” or “hacks.” To further battle cheating in World of Warcraft, you will be notified if you are running a program that is deemed by Blizzard Entertainment to be a 3rd -party cheat program that violates the Terms of Use agreement. We have found that players do not always realize that a cheat program has been installed on the computer on which they’re playing, especially in the case of Internet gaming cafés and single-computer households. The Blizzard Launcher’s virus/cheat scan does not transmit any information to Blizzard. The main purpose of this scan is to notify you if you have something installed on the computer you’re using that may put your account information or your access to World of Warcraft at risk.
Q: The Blizzard Launcher didn’t notify me that I was using a cheat program, but I got my account closed anyway. What can I do?
A: A violation of the Terms of Use can result in account discipline, including the closure of your account. Please review the Terms of Use located at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html , as well as the World of Warcraft Code of Conduct policies located at http://www.blizzard.com/support/wowgm/?id=agm01712p for more information. Note also that Blizzard Entertainment employs anti-cheating technology in World of Warcraft itself in an effort to protect legitimate players and the integrity of the game service from those attempting to gain an unfair advantage through the use of hacks. (See Section 13(A), entitled “Acknowledgments” of the Terms of Use, for more information). This technology is designed to identify when cheating is taking place in the game, which is addressed as discussed above. The Blizzard Launcher’s virus/cheat scan is designed to notify you of a program that exists on the computer you’re using that could be identified by World of Warcraft’s built-in anti-cheating technology, to give you an opportunity to remove any such program prior to running World of Warcraft.
Q: How can I bypass the Blizzard Launcher?
A: Because the Blizzard Launcher was designed to provide quick access to World of Warcraft and to important World of Warcraft-related information, as well as to help protect you from harmful programs that might have been installed on your computer without your knowledge (or on the computer on which you’re playing World of Warcraft), we strongly recommend that you use the Blizzard Launcher as your starting point for the game. However, if you prefer to bypass the Blizzard Launcher and do without the benefits it provides, you can run World of Warcraft by double-clicking the WoW.exe file located in your World of Warcraft installation folder (generally C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft).
